First Image From Velma Shows The Series’ Tone

Mystery Inc is one of the most iconic groups pop culture has ever seen. Scooby Doo, Shaggy, Fred, Daphney, and of course Velma. Over the years we have seen many different incarnations of the gang. Debuting in 1969, the Hanna-Barbera cartoon series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! was an instant hit. And Now HBO Max is looking to give us a unique and new look at one of the iconic members. Typically depicted wearing an orange turtleneck sweater over a pleated red skirt, Velma is the most intelligent member of the Scooby Gang and is frequently instrumental in solving mysteries, despite having a habit of losing her glasses, rendering her blind.

In February 2021, Warner Bros announced that the character would be getting an animated spin-off, which will follow the character’s origin story before she ever encountered Scooby-Doo or the Mystery Machine. The Office writer and star Mindy Kaling has signed on to voice the character as well as serve as the shows executive producer.

At the Warner Bros Discovery Upfront event, Mindy Kaling spoke about the project, and gave us our first look at it. The photo shows Velma in a locker room, discovering a grisly murder scene, complete with a body with the top of its skull cut off and its brain removed. It’s not at all what life long fans would expect, but definitely a new take on the IP. Check it out below

Like I said, much different take on the character, but change is not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes reinventing characters can be very fun for us the viewer. Take Star Trek Lower Decks for example. Much different take on the Star Trek Universe, but still fits, and is fun to watch. I expect this project to be extremely fun! I can not wait ti see more! But what say you? Are you excited? Answer the call in comments below.
