Sony is hard at work on the Sony–Verse. The Venom franchise is riding high, and they are just coming off of a record setting Spider–Man film that has generated huge interest in the return of Andrew Garfield and The Amazing Spider–Man for a third outing. Morbius is finally set to hit theaters on April 1st, and Kraven The Hunter is heading our way as well. A while back Sony had mentioned a Madame Web film to join the Sony–Verse. And now we have some casting.

Deadline is reporting that Dakota Johnson of the 50 Shades Of Grey franchise is in final negotiations to play the character in her own film. Johnson, daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, has an incredible career aside from her breakout role in 50 Shades. Her credits include The Social Network, Black Mass, Bad Times at the El Royale, and Peanut Butter Falcon to name a few. This year alone she has a starring role in Netflix’s The Lost Daughter, and her Sundance film Cha Cha Real Smooth sold to Apple for $15 million, and will next be seen in Persuasion.
Madame Web is a clairvoyant, and precognitive mutant who first showed up to help Spider–Man find a kidnap victim. Most notable to the character, outside the comics she appears in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, voiced by Joan Lee. This version is an ally of the Beyonder with similar powers over reality tasked with testing Spider–Men from across the multiverse to determine whether they can stop Spider–Carnage from destroying the multiverse. Web is the grandmother of the fourth Spider–Woman, Charlotte Witter.
With a screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, S.J. Clarkson is on board to direct the film. Deadline reports that given the characters history, do not be surprised if this project develops into something other then just a solo Madame Web film, perhaps some kind of team up within the Sony–Verse. However, Deadline also reports that they look to make Madame Web almost a Doctor Strange type of character for the Sony–Verse.
While at first glance, and probably second, Johnson does not seem to fit the role of Madame Web. But if you can get a top notch talent like Dakota Johnson, and make the character work, that sounds like a winning combination if you ask me. What do you think? Answer the call in the comments below!
