What up world! Welcome to a brand new year where we are all excited to start answering the new calls that will come into our lives. I wanted to kick off our sophomore year here at The Grind with the most anticipated films of the year. Normally this would have been a video for the youtube page, but since I recently moved, in the middle of the holidays, I have been slacking, and the content on the page has been lacking. So I figured what the hell, let’s just write it out for you all!
So these are the films I am most excited for, not that I think will be in the best of the year, but the ones I believe I have the most fun with. There a lot of films coming out, and the cinema landscape is changing everyday. With the Omarion Variant looming around and theaters still not 100% back despite No Way Home’s incredible performance. As of now it looks like all these will be Theater exclusives, but we will have to see as the year goes on. I for one hope for some at home day and date releases, but maybe that’s just me.
Honorable Mention
First up is the Honorable mentions. First up we have Mission Impossible 7. The MI franchise has been amazing to watch over the years. It has upped the ante ever since the first film back in 1996. Back then the films kind’ve brought about big twists; while today’s installments have us looking forward to incredible action sequences and Tom Cruise performing a new over the top stunt. Once again directed by Christopher McQuarrie, and stars Cruise, Ving Rhames, Henry Czerny, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Frederick Schmidt, all of whom will reprise their roles from the previous films. Joining the new impossible mention will be Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Esai Morales, Rob Delaney, Charles Parnell, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, and Cary Elwes. Scheduled for release in theaters on September 30, 2022 with a streaming release on Paramount+ in November 2022.

Next up we have Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The sequel to the smash hit Aquaman continues to push the DCEU. I loved the first film. It wasn’t anything trying to change the genre, or reinvent the wheel. It wasn’t looking for an oscar. It was just a fun superhero adrenalin ride that had us having a fun time in the world of DC. Something greatly needed by DC. I expect the sequel to do the same. Be fun and a great escape from the mundaneness of life for a few hours. Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom once agains stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry / Aquaman alongside Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temuera Morrison, and Nicole Kidman. Directed by James Wan, it will hit theaters on December 16, 2022.

Morbius is a film with a lot of mystery surrounding it. Not that we do not know what it is, but the the future of the Spider-Verse. The MCU. Venom. This movie can tell us a lot about where we are going. A movie that seems to have nods to a lot of other Spider-Franchises. Definitely in the same universe as Venom, but also has a Raimi Spider-Man easter egg, as well as a MCU connection. Plus all the rumors that this is the world the Amazing Spider-Man. So what does this movie mean for the future of the Spider-Verse? We will finally find out on January 28, 2022. Morbius stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius alongside Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson, and is directed by Daniel Espinosa.
EDIT
Well that was a quick change! Morbius, previously scheduled for Jan 28 has just been pushed back! Now it looks like we will have to wait until the Spring for the Anti-Heroic Vampire as it will now be released on April 1st. Which sounds like an April Fools Joke as perhaps we just won’t ever get to see this movie. Word is that the move has to do with success of No Way Home as Sony wants to add a little breathing room for the incredibly successful film.
Finally we have a movie that honestly would have been my number 1. It was my number 1, until the cast was announced. Now those of you who have followed me for the past few years, you know that one of my all time favorite movies is Super Mario Bros. Not only is it one of my favorite films, but Mario is one of my favorite Franchises. I still watch The Super Mario Bros Super Show on Netflix regularly. When the announcement of a new Super Mario project was made I was over the moon excited to see his triumphant return to the big screen

However, as the cast was announced, my excitement dropped a little bit. Mario is an icon, his voice is iconic. An Italian plumber. A New Yorker. From Brooklyn. A very distinct sound. Only to find out that it would be midwesterner Chris Pratt bringing us the voice Mario. It’s nothing against Pratt, he is a great actor, and an awesome voice actor. Get? Everything is Awesome? You get it, right? Yea you do. Either way, despite my reservations, It is still Mario. So while it has dropped down the list, I am still excited to see it. Besides he may only be a supporting voice, but Sebastian Maniscalco is going to be in the film. And he’s a perfect addition. Plus Jack Black as Bowser, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong!? That is going to be pretty epic!
So that is my honorable mentions for this years upcoming film! What makes your honorable mentions? What do you think will make the top 10 list? Answer the call in the comments below! Stay tuned for part 2 on Wednesday, with 10-6.
