Deadline is reporting that Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men First Class) has signed on to take part of the new Universal Monsters film, Renfield.

Hoult will play the title character Renfield, made famous by Dwight Frye in the original Universal Monster Classics. Hoult was most recently seen in Those Who Wish Me Dead alongside Angelina Jolie, and recently signed on to a starring role in Searchlight’s The Menu.
Renfield will be directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) and is based on an original story outline from Robert Kirkman with Ryan Ridley writing the script. Details of the movie’s plot are currently unknown, as is whether this is an intention to restart up the Dark Universe. Deadline reports that the film is believed to take place during the present day. In the original Dracula novel, and film, Renfield was an inmate at an asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions but actually is a servant of Dracula.
It looks as if Universal is developing multiple projects based on their classic monsters, despite the idea that the Universal Universe died with the poor performance of Tom Cruises The Mummy. Ryan Gosling is said to be a part of an upcoming Wolfman film, and James Wan is working on a Van Helsing film as well.
Renfield is not the most well-known of the Universal Monsters characters. However, rumors suggest the film will be a mix of humor and action. What do you think of this casting and movie idea? Are on board for more Universal Monsters? Answer the Call in the comments below!
