Dune has had an extraordinarily strong cult like following. While I have never seen the first miniseries, or read the books, the upcoming Denis Villeneuve film has a little bit of hype behind it that has me intrigued. Though to be honest I was rubbed a little bit of the wrong way with Villeneuve’s “temper tantrum” about WB putting all their films on HBO Max. I certainly understand his anger, however, as a consumer, I have come to embrace the idea of streaming films rather making trips to a theater full of disrespectful people. But that’s a story for another time. Today, we have been given a slew of character posters for the upcoming film as the marketing depart starts up their campaign.
As you can see, the film has an all-star cast, including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan–Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem. Set in the far future of humanity, Duke Leto Atreides (Isaac) accepts stewardship of the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune, the only source of the most valuable substance in the universe, spice, a drug that extends human life, provides superhuman levels of thought, and makes faster-than-light travel practical.
Dune is scheduled to be premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021 and released theatrically in the United States in 3D on October 22, 2021 by Warner Bros. Pictures with a simultaneous release on the HBO Max streaming service for 31 days.
